Ultrasonic leak detectors

  • Published: 18/03/2010

CYGNUS Instruments, distributed by Russell Fraser Sales, has released the CygScope R and RD ultrasonic listening devices which can be used to identify and locate leaks.

The company claims the highly sensitive instruments can reduce energy and maintenance costs associated with steam traps, compressed air and vacuum systems. They work by detecting ultrasound produced by escaping air or gas.

The ultrasound technology can also be used to detect early signs of arcing from electrical equipment, control panels/cabinets and overhead power transmission cables.

The distributor says it can provide a range of probes to scan large industrial areas or pinpoint a leak in a specific valve or fitting. The Parabolic Probe, for example, can detect leaks 20m away with the aid of an integrated red dot rifle sight.

According to the company, the CygScope R has a built in loudspeaker and LED level display to audibly and visually alert the user to leakages. The RD unit also includes a digital LCD readout to allow comparative measurements.
