WÄRTSILÄ and ABB Turbo Systems have developed two-stage turbocharging technology to reduce emissions from large diesel engines.
The two-stage turbocharging technology has been implemented on Wärtsilä 20 and 32 diesel engines.
Wärtsilä focused on developing advanced engine technology, while ABB Turbo Systems delivered the turbocharging technology with defined performance in terms of airflow, pressure ratios and efficiency.
In the new engine design, two turbochargers are arranged in series to generate increased air pressure, airflow and a superior turbocharging effect. According to the companies, this resulted in an efficiency rating of up to 76%.
Increased air pressure, combined with the engine technology, improved the engine output and power density by up to 10%, while reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The developers claim they are continuing development for efficient engines, and these technologies will play an important role in industrial emissions control.
