Energy-efficient wireless motion detector

  • Published: 13/07/2008

ABB has developed a wireless motion detector that does not consume mains electricity and can subsist for five to seven years from the power of three standard 1.5V alkaline batteries.

According to the company, the Busch-Watchdog wireless motion detector provides energy-efficient and cost-effective building surveillance. Its power requirements and wireless design means the device does not require wiring.

It can be placed anywhere users require it.

Battery life can be further extended up to ten years if lithium iron disulfide cells are used.Consisting of three interconnected modules comprising sensors, radio communications and microcontrollers, the unit is said to have powerful lens and a range of functionality.

It can detect moving objects within 16 metres.

The microcontroller supports several power-down modes that allow the detector to go to “sleep” during the daytime.

It will “wake up” as light fades and if a moving object is detected.
