WorkSafe Victoria investigates inspector assault

WORKSAFE Victoria says it is investigating an alleged assault of an inspector at the Lardner Park Fieldays on 26 March 2010.

WorkSafe Victoria says its inspector was subjected to offensive language and intimidation after attempting to caution a person riding on the draw bar of a trailer attached to a rubbish collection vehicle.

The inspector stopped the vehicle and tried to warn the person regarding the dangers of the act. The driver refused to identify himself, and used the vehicle to push the inspector away while verbally abusing him.

WorkSafe Victoria says assaulting an inspector can attract a two-year prison term and fines of up to up to $6,450 for individuals. WorkSafe inspectors have the right to enter workplaces at any time to ensure safety standards are maintained.

The safety organisation has previously prosecuted people who obstructed or assaulted safety inspectors.
