Safe Work Australia announces the Fifth Annual Safe Work Australia Week, which takes place from 25-31 October 2009.
Safe Work Australia Week is designed to focus attention on workplace safety by encouraging working Australians to get involved in, and concentrate on, safety in their workplace to reduce death, injury and disease.
This year national Safe Work Australia Week will focus on the harmonisation of occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation.
According to Safe Work Australia, more than 135,000 Australians are seriously injured at work every year and more than 260 die as a result of work-related injuries.
In addition, the total economic cost of work-related injuries and illnesses to the Australian economy for the 2005-2006 financial year is estimated at $57.5 billion, representing 5.9 per cent of GDP.
To help avoid work-related injuries, Safe Work Australia is helping states and territories promote safe workplaces during Safe Work Australia Week.
Among the ACT’s activities include OHS seminars, a health and safety show, and a public seminar on the Work Safety Act.
Tasmania is hosting a series of seminars whose topics include injury management and health and wellbeing.
Western Australia is promoting 10 @10 across the state, which encourages workers to take 10 minutes to talk about safety topics at the workplace, including manual handling, occupational stress, infection control, and slips, trips and falls.
Victoria will host seminars designed to help Victorian workers, employers and businesses get up-to-date with the latest information on workplace health and safety.
Queensland is offering a number of ways to get healthy on the job, as well as a range of activities every day during the month of October.
The Safety Show Sydney, to be held 27-29 October at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, will conclude the month's activities in New South Wales, which is also encouraging businesses to get involved in WorkCover NSW activities.
