What to look for in metalworking software

With metal shops using increasingly sophisticated machines, the next big opportunity for productivity improvements is in the software which drives them. Radan suggests the following 10 tips to improve productivity and profits.

1. Consider using a single software package that runs all the machines in your factory, whether it’s folding, punching, laser cutting, or plasma cutting. This will substantially reduce your training downtime and makes moving from one machine to another seamless.

2. Ensure that this package can seamlessly import native files from CAD vendors such as SolidWorks and Inventor.

3. Does the software package optimise the cutting patterns for nesting and then graphically display the results before cutting commences? This will reduce waste and improve utilisation.

4. Check if the software package does estimating. Many parts of the estimating process are repetitive and software that removes the repetition will save time and money.

5. Find a software package that not only does all the above but also does the invoicing. Software which integrates the manufacturing and the estimating makes invoicing easy. 6. Improved stock control is the key to improved profitability.

7. Intranet access will allow your whole office to see what’s going on in the shop floor.

8. Install a manufacturing software package that manages and controls left over material, therefore reducing wastage and expense.

9. Laser, plasma and punch technology are being continuously improved. Modern day software needs to be in line with these advances.

10. Automating your process from design to manufacture is the key to creating cost saving efficiencies in your daily process.
