The Victorian government has announced a $4 million assistance grant for the state's ailing manufacturing sector.

The grant comes amid union claims there have been almost 20,000 job losses in Victoria's manufacturing industry since May.

Brad Dunston from the Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing said the grants would help businesses with research and development.

"It's going to hopefully give them that competitive edge which keeps them alive," Dunston said.

"They face the pressure of cost-down manufacturing from the growing [sectors] of India and China."
