Victoria University researchers, in collaboration with Chosun Refractory and CI Ceramics, are developing advanced ceramic membranes for sustainable water treatment.
The research project is partially funded by the Australia Research Council’s Linkage projects grants.
According to the researchers, the project will seek to target the rising popularity of options to treat used water for reuse.
Membrane technology is used for water treatment in all new desalination plants. Current technology is polymeric based, and must be routinely cleaned with chemicals and replaced.
The research will demonstrate functional ceramic membranes which last longer and have lower requirement for cleaning chemicals and expert maintenance.
The scientists say the development will deliver water at lower cost and reduced environmental burden, giving industry more sustainable solutions to treat water.
