Victoria calls on federal government for help

Victorian Premier John Brumby says his government has done what it can to help the state’s ailing manufacturing industry and that it is up to the federal government to help.

Following last week’s revelations that 100 staff jobs were in jeopardy, regional Victorian car components manufacturer Teson Trims announced yesterday it had gone into voluntary administration with a $2 million debt. Teson Trims has been a supplier of car upholstery to Ford which recently announced 350 job cuts at its Victorian plant.

While Teson Trims’ announcement is the latest in a series of setbacks for the state's automotive industry, Mr Brumby says his government has done all that it can.

"The bulk of the levers that you can pull to help the manufacturing industry are with the federal government," he said.

"They're things like tariffs, they're things like direct industry support, so I think we're doing everything we can to support manufacturing industry.
