SEM Fire and Rescue is aiming to double the capacity of its emergency service vehicles manufacturing facility with the help of SolidWorks CAD/CAM software.
Intercad will provide the software, as well as training and technical support services to the Ballarat-based vehicle manufacturer.
The company designs and manufactures pumpers, tankers and hazardous materials support vehicles for the fire and rescue industry. It also develops bomb response vans, prisoner transport vehicles and mobile office units.
The manufacturer says using 3D virtual models allows customers to visualise the finished product in a way 2D cannot replicate.
The virtual model is built like a prototype, and is said to save time and money by reducing downstream manufacturing errors. Customers can also quickly approve designs and agree on any variables upfront before going into production.
By doing more design work upfront, SEM Fire and Rescue is aiming to halve the time taken to assemble its vehicles, and significantly reduce procurement and assembly issues on production commencement.
