SKILLSTECH Australia’s Bracken Ridge Training Centre has hosted an Electrotechnology training showcase for year 10, 11 and 12 school students, parents and teachers in an attempt to tackle the skills shortages in the electrical, refrigeration, telecommunication and renewable energy industries.
SkillsTech Australia is the TAFE institute for trade and technician training and has attracted more than 20,000 students throughout South East Queensland in 2010.
According to SkillsTech Australia Institute director Mary Campbell, the electrotechnolgy field is consistently identified as one of the largest areas of skills shortage in the Australian workforce.
“The electrotechnology training showcase is one of our institute’s initiatives to try and combat the skills shortage; to try and bridge that gap,” Campbell said.
“Electrotechnology programs provide pathways into further study and university or careers in electrical, refrigeration, telecommunication and renewable energy industries and currently make up almost 2000 students at Bracken Ridge’s Training Centre alone.”
The programs are designed to help students determine which areas of the trade are suited to their individual needs.
SkillsTech Australia courses and programs have been designed in close consultation with business and industry, ensuring industry-relevant skills and knowledge for its graduates.
The Queensland Government has committed more than $200 million to the development of facilities at SkillsTech Australia to address skills shortages, with more than $140 million invested so far.
