Work-related injuries are down in South Australia, according to the results of SafeWork SA’s Industry Improvement Program.

SA Industrial Relations Minister Paul Caica told State Parliament about the first available results on SafeWork SAs Industry Improvement Program, which began in April 2007.

“This program targets industry sectors and employers found to have contributed disproportionately to workplace injury and illness claims in South Australia,” the minister said.

The results show an improvement within the first group targeted, which were 169 medium-sized worksites, including factories and construction sites, Caica said.

According to the report, Caica continued, there was a 16.2 per cent reduction in all claims and a 21.2 per cent reduction in income maintenance claims between July 2006 and June 2008.

Using specific and tailored strategies for small, medium, and large businesses, the Industry Improvement Program provides information, advice, education and, where necessary, enforcement actions to foster a systematic approach to managing health and safety.

Caica said that in a telephone survey of employers, 99 per cent of respondents reported they were satisfied with the standard of service provided and 93 per cent made a change to their policies and procedures as a result of being involved in the strategy.

The program will continue throughout 2009.
