QLD mine safety report reveals general improvement

QUEENSLAND Mines and Energy Minister Stephen Robertson has released the Queensland Mines and Quarries Safety Performance and Health Report 2008-2009.

The Queensland Mines and Quarries Safety Performance and Health Report 2008-2009 reveals a general improvement in safety and health in the state's mines and quarries.

According to the Queensland Resources Council, the Queensland mining industry has reported its best safety performance on record.

The lost time injury frequency rate, which is a measure of the number of injuries per million hours worked, is down from 4.3 to 3.4.

However, the Minister noted the average number of days lost due to injury and illness has risen from 32.9 days to 36.6 days per injury. While there are fewer injuries overall, those injuries which do occur are more serious.

In 2008 to 2009, four people died in mining and quarry incidents.

According to both the QRC and the Minister, there is no acceptable level of death and injury. They have pledged to continue prioritising the health and safety of workers.
