More manufacturing jobs forecast for bus industry

The Australian bus and coach industry says it hopes to create 10,000 jobs over the next five years, many of them in the manufacturing sector.

The industry has launched a recruitment drive this week, saying an increased demand for bus services will create jobs in service supply and manufacturing sectors.

Michael Apps from the Bus Industry Confederation of Australia says manufacturing and supply service skills will be important as the industry grows and jobs are available now.

"For too long the industry's been largely painted as being about the driver and the bus, when it actually involves a diverse range of opportunities," he said.

"There's been dramatic increases in demand for public transport, which is including, obviously, bus and coach services. And we don't see that changing."

Apps said the Confederation believes that over the next five years there is an opportunity for the 10,000 jobs to be created. He said this was based on existing public transport increases in patronage.
