ROCKWELL Automation says machine builders are beginning to exploit modular programming standards to improve design consistency and speed, and reduce costs.
According to Rockwell Automation, modular programming concepts, such as code structuring, tag naming conventions and state model implementation, provide machine builders with a common framework.
Industry standards provide this consistency. These include the ISA-88, which is being expanded with new ideas and contributions to expand the concept of modular programming.
The ISA-88 standard committee has approved and incorporated the Organization for Machine Automation and Control PackML, which is now published in ISA-TR88.00.02.
Rockwell Automation says PackML provides a broadly recognized machine state model and standardized data model to ensure programmers are speaking the same language and using terminology consistently.
Structured, reusable models are said to help substantially reduce system integration time and costs for dedicated equipment. The HMI graphic objects also have a standardised look and feel, making it easier for operators and software personnel to recognize application functionality across applications and suppliers.
