Mitsubishi says sayonara to Australia

Mitsubishi’s Tokyo head office has brought an end to 27 years of making cars in Australia after poor sales of the company’s 380 sedan model.

The closure of Mitsubishi's car manufacturing operations in Adelaide comes after production at the plant slowed to just 35 vehicles a day.

Around 1000 workers at the Adelaide facilities will be affected by the closure.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and South Australian Premier Mike Rann have announced a $50 million package to help retrain the 930 sacked workers from the Tonsley Park factory.

Australia’s manufacturing sector is beset by fierce competition from low-wage countries and a strong Australian dollar, and Mitsubishi’s decision is a sign of challenges faced in other sectors of the manufacturing industry.
