Minister denies deteriorating manufacturing sector

The federal Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Senator Kim Carr has accused the Opposition of running down the manufacturing sector.

The federal Opposition used Question Time in Parliament to point out that the Treasury's modelling for the carbon reduction scheme predicted manufacturing would continue to decline.

However, Senator Carr said he did not believe Australia's manufacturing sector was deteriorating.

The minister was asked if that meant that he thought the Treasury's model was flawed but Senator Carr accused the Opposition of talking down the sector.

"Senator Abetz, I maintain my optimism about the future of Australian manufacturing," he said.

"What you are seeking to do, once more, is to run down manufacturing."
