Mercury vapour emissions sensor to aid aluminium industry

RMIT University researchers are developing a highly sensitive and selective nano-engineered sensor for the online monitoring of mercury vapour emissions.

Mercury vapour emissions is a part of the Australian alumina and aluminium industries, which contribute over $11b export income annually. The project is in partnership with Alcoa of Australia, and BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina.

All refineries, except one, operate in rural areas and are the main economic drivers in these regions. The mercury emissions monitoring sensors will help the industry reduce the environmental impact of its processes.

The project will develop robust sensors which will provide online monitoring under challenging industrial environments.
