Manufacturing, a future for women

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) is trying to find ways of attracting more women to the industry's apprenticeships.

The AMWU says the manufacturing sector is suffering from a major skills shortage.

And this is set to worsen if industry projections are accurate.

The union's Andrew Dettmer said increasing the number of women working in the industry could help ease the national skills shortage.

"What we're trying to do is to get our female members to think about those issues and to develop the things which are going to be attractive especially to young women," he said.

"It's really important for us as a union with its heart and soul in manufacturing to see as many people as possible, and especially as many women as possible, seeing a manufacturing traineeship or a manufacturing apprenticeship as a future for them."
