AROUND 25 safety interactive workshops have taken place around the country in the NSW manufacturing sector as part of a national safety campaign to improve machine guarding in the manufacturing industry.
The objective of the workshops was to build capacity of businesses to manage their OHS obligations particularly with regard to plant and machinery safety.
Workplace safety authorities across Australia have reported that a preliminary analysis of the workshop evaluations indicates a high degree of industry support for this approach.
Another element of this campaign includes pre-audit and post-audit surveys, of employers and employees in the manufacturing industry, administered by the Office of Australian Safety Compensation Council (OASCC).
The purpose of the surveys is to seek workplace representative’s views of the barriers and enablers to compliance with regards to guarding of machinery.
As part of the campaign, workplace safety inspectors in New South Wales are currently visiting over 100 manufacturing industry workplaces to provide practical advice and assistance about safety requirements specific to guarding machinery and equipment.
WorkCover NSW and WorkSafe Victoria is setting up a joint stand at National Manufacturing Week 2008 to promote their strategy and demonstrate the common commitment of both jurisdictions to take a collaborative and practical approach to safety.
Representatives from the Manufacturing Team, the Business Advisory Group (BAG), TestSafe, and WorkSafe Victoria will be present at the stand to provide visitors with practical advice and information.
