Lathe Chuck Guard sees Bendigo TAFE win OHS award

BENDIGO Regional Institute of TAFE won the Best Solution to a Health and Safety Risk award at WorkSafe Victoria’s 2009 awards, for developing a Lathe Chuck Guard.

The Lath Chuck Guard protects lathe operators by refusing to close if the key is left in the chuck. The guard is interlocked, so the lathe can only be started with the guard closed.

Chucks in lathes can spin at 1000rpm or more, causing the key to fly out from the machine with high force, a hazardous projectile that could result in serious injury to the operator or others close to the lathe.

The Lathe Chuck Guard developed by the Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE is said to be a simple and effective way to reduce the risk of projectile keys. It can be adapted to a range of lathes across industries.

The WorkSafe Victoria Best Solution to a Health and Safety Risk Award acknowledges an organisation for initiatives in the workplace that eliminate or significantly reduces a risk to health and safety.
