CAD/CAM specialist Intercad is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its operations in Australia, with growth in software sales of 42% in the last 12 months.
The company is the sole distributor of SolidWorks 3D CAD/CAM technology in Australia and New Zealand, and supplies designers, engineers and manufacturers with software, training and support to achieve complex manufacturing design tasks.
“In the 20 years Intercad has been in business the company has experienced a drastic change in the local manufacturing sector, and in the design software that supports innovative Australian design,” Intercad managing director Scott Frayne said.
“Years ago 3D CAD/CAM packages were only available to large organisations and manufacturers that could afford a two-to-three year return on investment,” he said.
“Over the years the price has come down and now more than 80% of our customers are SMEs.
Acccording to Frayne, the local manufacturing sector has evolved to be part of the global economy and Australian businesses are competing with more cost-effective regions to manufacture products.
“If Australian companies want to retain their competitive advantage they must embrace advanced design tools like design automation and design data re-use, and the training and technical support that goes with them,” he said.
“SolidWorks allows a designer to automate repetitive tasks and use design data highly efficiently throughout an organisation, which means they can spend more time designing products,” he said.
“Intercad’s own internal technology means the company can help our customers get the most out of the software by providing centralised technical support via remote desktop access and web-based or face-to-face training.”
According to Frayne, the local industry is moving further away from low value manufacturing and closer to design-oriented innovation.
“Our company wants to help designers and engineers make design the most important part of the product development process,” he said.
“Getting products right the first time makes them cheaper to manufacture and improves product quality and time-to-market.”
