Financial support for engine emission monitoring

A UK industrial technology company that develops greener instrumentation for energy-intensive industries has attracted new funding of many millions of pounds to keep driving its R&D into carbon emissions reduction.

Oxsensis makes sensor technology that helps to control engine combustion in gas turbines in the aviation and power sectors. It is working with industry giants such as Rolls-Royce and Siemens to develop low-carbon power plants and also has attracted interest from key manufacturers in the motor industry.

This fine-tuning control allows emissions to be reduced, thus cutting the amount of carbon gases released into the atmosphere. It could help the aero-engine industry in its quest to be much more efficient and it also shows promise for the next generation of greener “fuel-miser” car engines.

Oxsensis is poised to revolutionise instrumentation in the power, manufacturing and transport sectors, having developed the world’s only commercial temperature and pressure sensors capable of functioning at more than 1,000°C. Current sensors can only operate at up to 800°C. The technology is capable of enabling significant improvements in engine emissions and efficiency, helping to meet increasingly stringent environmental emissions targets.

David Gahan, chief executive officer of Oxsensis, said the new technology could improve the way fossil fuels are used.

“The aero industry has been told it must cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2020. We are helping to make the next generation of engines a lot more efficient,” Gahan said.

“This technology, developed using some of the best technical resources in the world at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), can now move forward into solid industrial supply of sensors to our customers in major energy-consuming industries. The £4.36m investment will enable Oxsensis to put optical sensors right into the heart of some of the world’s most advanced engine and power plant developments.”
