Direct titanium components manufacturing facility for Ferra Engineering

LOCKHEED Martin has signed a memorandum of agreement with Ferra Engineering to establish a direct manufacturing facility in Australia to produce the JSF vertical tail.

According to the parties, the new facility will have new titanium machining technology, reducing the amount of time taken to machine parts and cutting waste titanium.

Ferra Engineering will also host an additional 200 jobs to cater for the production. Production will start in 2012, with first deliveries by 2015.

Lockheed Martin claims the new direct manufacturing process can save between 30 and 50% of the cost of machining aerospace titanium structural components.
