DEMATIC says its Multishuttle Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) has transformed the supply chain performance of German company Ferdinand Gross.
Ferdinand Gross supplies fastener and connectivity technologies. Aiming to improve customer service, it upgraded the logistics systems at its distribution in Leinfelder-Echterdingen, Germany.
According to the company, in incorporating both types of Dematic’s Multishuttle system, it managed to reduce its order processing times from 3.5 hours to 30 minutes.
It was also able to extend daily order cut off deadlines by three hours due to the increased efficiency, and reduce order fulfilment times for Kanban customers from one week to one day.
The Multishuttle resulted in a total of 120,000 shelf storage locations within the distribution centre, helping cater for Ferdinand Gross’ stock of 72,000 standard parts, 24,000 customer specific parts and 11,000 tools.
Dematic says its Multishuttle system allows for fast, accurate automated picking within high density storage systems.
Instead of using cranes in each aisle to pick and transport goods, Multishuttle uses multiple intelligent self-propelled carts, which can roam throughout the different levels of the storage systems. They interface with an integrated conveyor which delivers the picked items in the correct sequence.
The Multishuttle can operate in Captive and Roaming configurations. The Captive configuration is suited for high throughput applications such as order picking and order consolidation buffers. Roaming systems are suited for low to medium throughput applications.
In the case of Ferdinand Gross, both Captive and Roaming versions were integrated in the single storage system.
