SYDNEY-based sheet metal manufacturer Interfab has replaced most of its manual grinding with Kuhlmeyer technology from Maxitec.
Most of the manufacturer’s sheetmetal production culminates in a powder-coated or plated finished product. As such, grinding finish of welds and edges need to be of high quality.
While the company still executes some processes in an enclosed manual grinding bay, it is putting some jobs through the automatic grinding machine, achieving an excellent finish.
Automated grinding is suited for jobs with very visible straight and corner welds in stainless steel, aluminium and mild steel. As the machine removes any over-weld, when the powder coat is applied, the welded joint is concealed.
The equipment allows operators to utilise suction cups to hold job pieces in place and replicate the grinding action until the entire batch has been processed. The operator uses a hand held flat pad or roller assembly to apply grind pressure onto the job piece. This requires no lifting.
With two parallel running grinding belts, one for coarse grinding and the other for fine finishing, it is possible to process work pieces in one clamping position using a machine.
