Pipe fittings manufacturer and distributor of water management products Philmac says it has 20 new robots in place to ensure it stays in competition.
According to Chris Stathy, managing director of the company, the local manufacturing industry faces competition not just from Asia, but also from European and American rivals on the rebound from the GFC.
Stathy claims manufacturers in those regions have survived the financial crisis by streamlining processes and improving productivity.
With excess capacity, these competitors are becoming increasingly aggressive in the marketplace, while retaining a technically advanced and efficient manufacturing base.
The company says it has identified smarter and more efficient local manufacturing as the key to its continued success. It has completed the final stage of a three-year robotics investment program, with 20 new robots now assembling products around the clock.
The manufacturer says it focused on robotics that allowed for greater flexibility in production to cater for a large amount of product configurations. Rather than solely prioritising speed, its cells adapt to different scenarios.
