ABB Australia has commissioned the world’s largest high pressure grinding roll drive system for the Boddington Gold Mine Expansion project in WA.

According to ABB, it worked together with Thyssen Krupp Polysius to make the Boddington Gold Mine operational again, after it closed at the end of 2001. The reopened mine is expected to run for at least 20 years, producing more than one million ounces of gold per year.

ABB says its drive systems are an essential part of the design. It delivered two 2800kW HPGR units of two converter transformers, two medium-voltage frequency converters and two squirrel cage induction motors.

ABB claims its ACS1000 variable speed drives will help optimise the grinding process, reducing the plant’s energy consumption. The drives will also provide operational flexibility for the processing heterogeneous types of ore at different throughput rates.
