JALOR Tools has been convicted and fined $80,000 for failing to provide safety information about its products to its customers.

Jalor Tools pleaded guilty to two workplace safety charges relating to a router bit which broke into three pieces on 21 December 2006, resulting in the death of a woman.

The woman was the daughter of the owner of an East Bentleigh door manufacturer and was using an industrial router to make the design on the front of a door when the router tool broke.

It was not alleged Jalor Tools’ failings were responsible for the 31-year-old woman’s death.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, the bit was suitable for operation between 6000 and 8000rpm, but was operating at around 15,000rpm during the incident.

Jalor Tools had not marked the tool with the maximum operating speed, nor did it provide written information about the safe operating speed.

WorkSafe Victoria says manufacturers, suppliers and retailers are legally required to provide adequate information about their products to end-users to ensure they were used safely.
